Sophia Shing is a driven student in the SCHS Class of 2026 who is guided by her passion for discovering and pursuing her interests, often through opportunities provided by the 49ers STEM Leadership Institute. While completing the many projects and rigorous coursework in the program, she developed a growing interest in medical science and has since been committed to applying her knowledge to real-world situations to improve herself and the lives of others.

Outside of academics, Sophia is an active member of SCHS activities. With 14 years of experience in art, she designed two years of winning Homecoming floats and Battle of the Classes flags for the class of 2026. Sophia is part of the SCHS Spirit Squad Dance team and demonstrates leadership as a 2-year VP of the Korean Student Association, founder and co-president of the SCHS World Travelers’ Club, and board member of the Neuroscience club.

On her own time, Sophia is a self-taught nail artist who runs a small business selling press-on nails to students and local customers. She loves to cook and bake, often finding ways to apply her interest in nutrition to creating health-based meals, and enjoys unwinding to interesting debates or podcasts on YouTube.

The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (49ers SLI) provides multi-year, year-round academic support, STEM enrichment, skills training, and leadership opportunities to students in middle and high school. Students, who are with the program for six years from 7th through 12th grade, commit annually to 300+ hours of program learning time in addition to their typical school hours. By cultivating student mastery in STEM subjects and in key skill areas, the program prepares students for college and empowers them to pursue their passions; so that they may become the well-rounded leaders of the future. The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute is made possible by the strong partnership between Silicon Valley Education Foundation, 49ers Foundation, ASML, and the Santa Clara Unified School District.
