As part of the 49ers STEM Institute since 7th grade, Alex Mathew has been involved in countless opportunities that have strengthened his engineering and design skills. These experiences include the The Tech Challenge hosted by The Tech Interactive, FIRST Tech Challenge, the Synopsys Science, and various engineering design challenges presented through STEM. Alex has also been active in his local community as a member of SLAM, which provides STEM opportunities to students at a Title I school. In addition, Alex volunteered at El Camino Health as a shift captain, where he was responsible for coordinating tasks and training new volunteers. Alex plans to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Outside of academics, Alex enjoys a diverse range of hobbies, such as playing the bass guitar, cubing and biking. He also enjoys learning new things, spending time with friends, and playing video games. In his free time he also enjoys hiking, playing volleyball and listening to music.

The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (49ers SLI) provides multi-year, year-round academic support, STEM enrichment, skills training, and leadership opportunities to students in middle and high school. Students, who are with the program for six years from 7th through 12th grade, commit annually to 300+ hours of program learning time in addition to their typical school hours. By cultivating student mastery in STEM subjects and in key skill areas, the program prepares students for college and empowers them to pursue their passions; so that they may become the well-rounded leaders of the future. The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute is made possible by the strong partnership between Silicon Valley Education Foundation, 49ers Foundation, ASML, and the Santa Clara Unified School District.
